Clark Planetarium launches a new program for those on the autism spectrum

“Sensory friendly Saturdays” will offer special hours and exhibit adjustments to accommodate those with sensory sensitivities.

Salt Lake City – As National Autism Awareness month draws to a close, Clark Planetarium announced it will begin a new monthly program specifically designed for families and individuals who are on the autism spectrum or who experience sensory sensitivities.

The program, called “Sensory friendly Saturdays,” starts Saturday, May 7, and thereafter will be held on the first Saturday of each month, between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. During those times, Clark Planetarium will adjust lights and sounds throughout the free exhibit area to facilitate a safe, welcoming, fun environment for those with sensory sensitivities.

“Clark Planetarium continually works to serve the community in meaningful ways,” said Anna Swenson, supervisor of Clark Planetarium’s community programs department. “Science is for everyone, and our new Sensory friendly Saturday program is one of the many steps we are taking to remove the barriers that exist in our organization and the field of science at large.

To further create a comfortable experience on Sensory friendly Saturdays, the planetarium will offer a sensory cool-down room for families and individuals who may need a break. In addition, sensory backpacks (including items such as sunglasses, fidget toys, magnifying glasses and noise-reduction earmuffs) will also be available for patrons to use.

“We invite people of all ages with sensory sensitivities to come and experience the Clark Planetarium in a fun, enjoyable and safe environment,” Swenson added. Those who have questions about the program can email CommunityPrograms@slco.org.
