Ocean Odyssey

Narrated by Dr. Sylvia Earle, legendary oceanographer and “Joan of Arc of the Ocean”

SALT LAKE CITY — Clark Planetarium is pleased to announce its opening of a new IMAX film “Ocean Odyssey.” With its award-winning cinematography, this film whisks audiences away to some of the most stunning locations along the East Australian Current—one of the major hidden marine rivers that flow around the Earth.

The film will play three to four times daily, starting Presidents’ Day Holiday weekend (Friday, Feb. 18) in the planetarium’s Northrop Grumman IMAX Theatre. Dr. Sylvia Earle, legendary oceanographer, and, in the words of filmmaker James Cameron, “Joan of Arc of the ocean,” will host and narrate the film. It continues her lifelong work of inspiring the exploration of and care for the oceans.

“Ocean Odyssey” follows a three-month-old baby whale on a magical journey down the East Australian Current where she discovers the incredible world of ocean currents. As our young whale migrates from the warm tropics to the ice floes of Antarctica, she meets the curious creatures that call the current home, and she discovers how the ocean nurtures all life on earth, from the smallest fish to us.

“The next ten years will shape the next ten thousand years,” said Dr. Earle. “This film not only shows what is out there, down there, why we should care but also what we can do while there is still time to make a difference.”

Director Nick Robinson adds, “We wanted to make a film, not about the individual creatures, but the connectivity between creatures, ecosystems, and the planet as a whole.”

The filmmaking team set out to portray the submarine world in the most visually compelling way they could — from the famous Great Barrier Reef to the lesser-known kelp ecosystems that cover one-fourth of the world’s coastlines. Along the way, they immerse the audience in the microscopic world of plankton, glide over anemone gardens, swim with playful fur seals, and explore an ocean cavern alongside numerous grey nurse sharks.

“Ocean Odyssey” is produced by Wild Pacific Media and Definition Films, in association with K2 Studios. The film is distributed by K2 Studios in Giant Screen/IMAX theaters at science centers and aquaria worldwide. A portion of ticket sales will support the work of Dr. Earle’s Ocean conservation group, Mission Blue.

Clark Planetarium is Utah’s premier astronomy learning museum located in Salt Lake City at the Gateway Center. The Planetarium’s mission is to inspire, engage and connect patrons to the vast opportunities related to astronomy and STEM. Exhibits are free to explore, and are open to the public, 354 days per year, and accommodate more than 300,000 visitors annually.
